IMAGINE A LIFE WITHOUT CHRONIC PAIN!

We look beyond the labels to discover the true source of your pain

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is fascia?

Fascia is a web-like tissue tied to our muscles, bones, nerves, organs, all the way down to the individual cells. All the space that isn't occupied by our body parts is occupied by fascia.  From a functional point of view, the fascia is a continuous sheet of connective tissue that extends without interruption from the top of our heads to the bottoms of our feet.

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is the release of myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

How do I know if fascial restrictions are the cause of my pain?

Trauma (physical and emotional), Inflammatory responses, poor posture, stress, repetitive use and/or surgical procedures create myofascial restrictions.  When an incoming force hits the body, your fascia dehydrates and shrinks producing extreme tightness that many refer to as “feeling as if you are in a strait jacket”.

A fascial restriction can create crushing pressure on pain sensitive structures of up to 2000 pounds per square inch

Unfortunately, myofascial restrictions are usually undiagnosed and become chronic because most standard tests such as X-Rays, MRIs, or CT scans cannot detect them.  If left untreated for any length of time, these restrictions can develop into unnecessary secondary problems with joints and organs.

Who is myofascial release for?

MFR is a great solution for many conditions including:

  • Back Pain

  • Headaches

  • Migraines

  • Whiplash

  • Neck Pain

  • Jaw Pain

  • Pelvic Pain

  • Sports Accidents

  • Accidents / Falls

  • Chronic Pain

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Chronic Fatigue

  • Myofascial Syndrome

  • Carpal Tunnel

  • and more!

How do I know if I need massage therapy or MFR?

Massage therapy is great for those with stiffness, trigger points and muscle tightness or pain.  Myofascial release (MFR) is usually for those cases when massage techniques just aren't cutting it.  Your therapist can identify where you have fascial adhesion/restrictions and advise you upon assessment on your 1st visit.  We can also include a mix of 50/50 Myofascial release into your massage session also if deemed appropriate or necessary.  So, try not to over analyze or fret on which session to book.  You can always mix it up or change your mind when you get here.

What does myofascial therapy feel like?

It involves gentle pressure and slow movements or stretches.  Holding a stretch for an extended period is a key aspect of MFR. This technique allows for the release of interleukin, a natural anti-inflammatory produced by the body, promoting healing. Each session is tailored to the individual, with stretches often held for 5 minutes or longer, to achieve the best results.

How many sessions will I need to get rid of my pain?

Everybody is unique so there is really no easy answer to this question. Typically, if you have been experiencing pain and dysfunction for many months or even years it will take more sessions than if you come with a new injury.

After your 1st session your therapist will suggest their recommendations and treatment plan that is unique to your needs.  Many clients notice dramatic results in as little as 6 consecutive sessions.

How often should I see you?

Frequent visits are generally recommended for best results.  For example, 1-3 times per week in the beginning, and then after we've reached your treatment goals its common to reduce to a maintenance schedule that is much less frequent.  You can come less often, but it will likely take much longer to reach your treatment goals.

How long does a session last?

All of our treatments whether Integrative myofascial release, or massage therapy last 90 minutes.

I am pregnant, is it safe for me to receive myofascial release?

Yes!  Pelvic tilt or torsion is a common cause of pain and disfunction in the body.  This is treatable with myofascial release. We release tension and restore balance in the pelvic region, alleviating pain and improving stability so that you can avoid unnecessary pain and issues during pregnancy and delivery.  MFR can also help with neck, shoulder tension, and sciatica, and post partum recovery.

A doctors note is required prior to treatment in the case of pregnancy.

I have cancer.  Is it safe for me to receive myofascial release?

Myofascial release (MFR) therapy can alleviate some of the conditions that cancer patients experience, including pain, fatigue, and lymphedema, and discomfort caused by surgery, radiation, and muscle tension.

This article: Myofascial Release as an Alternative or Adjunct Cancer Therapy: Biomedical Research and Scientific Rationale (wholehealingmfr.com) explains how MFR can be a powerful adjunct therapy for cancer.

A doctor's note is required prior to treatment in the case of active cancer diagnosis.  There are certain situations where MFR treatment will be contraindicated.  Feel free to call so that we can discuss your specific issues and goals.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not participate as an in-network provider for any insurance company. However, you may request an invoice to submit to your insurance company, FSA or HSA for reimbursement. Please check with your individual policy to verify that your plan reimburses for myofascial release.
